The House of Mouse's Real-Life Moana Trailer Appears Remarkably Like a Animated Film
The debut preview for the upcoming live-action adaptation of Moana has made its debut. Is it surprising that, like most of Disney's live-action remakes, it looks a lot like an animated film and much less like a true live-action movie?
Breathtaking Visuals Which Retain an Animated Feel
The trailer for the new version of Moana is undeniably spectacular. It includes sweeping scenery, gorgeous soundtrack, and familiar personalities. Yet, it also looks similar to an animated film. The over-the-top visuals depict characters flying, water defying gravity, and Maui changing into both a bug and a bird. All of this is achieved through computer-generated imagery and computer animation. Much like earlier Disney remakes—such as The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, and The Jungle Book—the level of animation is so high that it raises the question: what defines these films “live-action” besides the promotional term?
Narrative and Music Fans Know and Love
Whatever the case, this latest Moana appears to be a retelling of the original story, complete with fresh versions of the cherished musical numbers. As described in an official synopsis, “Moana heeds the Ocean’s call and, for the first time, voyages beyond the reef of her island of Motunui with the legendary demigod Maui on an unforgettable journey to restore prosperity to her people.”
Fresh Cast and Returning Faces
At the same time, the trailer features a snippet of the new take on “How Far I’ll Go,” sung by Catherine Laga'aia. The new actress is stepping into the role of Moana from Auliʻi Cravalho, who voiced the character in the original movies.
One person who returns is Dwayne Johnson, who will again be playing Maui. Of course, that role already resembled Johnson, so having him play the part in the real-life version appears logical.
Beloved Character Shows Up
Arguably the highlight moment of the preview arrives in the final shot. Moana's beloved chicken Hei Hei makes an appearance, screaming at the camera. What better way to present the movie’s true icon?
Arrival in Theaters
The real-life version of Moana arrives in theaters on July 10, 2026.
