Space Traveler Shares Mental Health Struggle Following Wave of Backlash Following Journey
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also included well-known figures.
The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash eclipsed her moment under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a social media post, recalling a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the days following the journey.
She described the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
The researcher, who has focused her career on women's health research and conducted tests during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her studies and years of training to the symbolic importance of her roots – was buried under the deluge of misogyny.
She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for survivors of assault.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was deferred after an attack during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.
A Path to Recovery
Months following fulfilling her dream, she reports that the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the well-wishers whose kindness helped save her. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.
She noted that amid the criticism, significant positive outcomes had come out of the flight, such as spotlight on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

The self-operating New Shepard rocket launched from its launch site in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that exceeded the edge of outer space.
The group of women also comprised experts in various fields.
