Paris Saint-Germain Edges Marseille in a Shootout to Secure French Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.
The Parisian club has now won the prestigious cup on 14 separate occasions.
Paris Saint-Germain needed a stoppage-time equaliser followed by a successful spot-kick decider to overcome Marseille in Kuwait and secure a record-extending fourth consecutive Trophee des Champions victory.
The European champions seemed to be sailing towards a comfortable triumph in the match featuring the Ligue 1 winners and the Coupe de France winners after the French winger opened the scoring in the opening stages.
However, Marseille struck two times late to take a surprise advantage. Initially, the English forward converted from the penalty spot, before the defender inadvertently turned the ball into his own net for an own-goal.
In a breathtaking twist of fortune, Goncalo Ramos snatched a vital equaliser in the final seconds to force the match into a penalty shootout. PSG goalkeeper Chevalier then emerged as the key figure, saving crucial attempts from Matt O'Riley and Hamed Traore.
From the spot, Ramos, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and Desire Doue all converted successfully for Paris Saint-Germain to seal a 4-1 penalty victory.
The record champions PSG, who faced last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Olympique de Marseille after achieving a domestic double, have now won this competition for the 12th time in the last 13 seasons.
