The Gunners' boss feels assured that his side can keep managing with injury setbacks after revealing that forward Kai Havertz is not ready for a few more weeks.

Prolonged Recovery for Havertz

The Germany international has been out since August after undergoing knee surgery. Initially expected to come back at the start of this month, Arteta revealed the player faced a hurdle when stepping up his training and failed to reach “the required stage.”

“We took lessons, and managed to assemble a team that is considerably steadier and has more options,” stated the manager.

Selection Dilemma for Midweek Fixture

This development leaves a dilemma for Wednesday’s match against Brentford. A decision is required between continuing to use Mikel Merino, who found the net playing out of position on Sunday, or bringing back Viktor Gyökeres, who came back after a fitness issue as a substitute. Long-term absentee Gabriel Jesus is also in contention after 11 months out.

Fitness Doubts Persist

Further fitness issues affect defender William Saliba and attacker Leandro Trossard, who both missed the Stamford Bridge game. As a result, new recruits Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié are likely to keep their places in the backline for the table-toppers.

Arteta believes the substantial investment on reinforcements in the last transfer window has resulted in a more robust situation to handle such absences.

Squad Depth Vital for Premier League Pursuit

When asked if a larger pool of players was benefiting their championship push, Arteta was emphatic. “Yes, because this season has seen more issues in some areas, and now what’s happening with the backline,” he added.

“We learned from the past that we need to utilize players in different positions, and they need to be prepared to perform various functions if we aim to challenge at this level. And the instance of Mikel is probably the prime illustration.”

Manager’s Sympathy for Suffering Star

Speaking about the delay highlighted by Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann, Arteta provided further detail. “His recovery was progressing. He failed to advance to the required step and now the signs are like we have overcome that hurdle.”

The manager conveyed his personal desire to see him return. “The team is keen to have him. Honestly, Havertz is someone that, for me, I value highly for the qualities he offers to the team, but his character, his nature. I watch him struggle while sidelined.”

“His fitness history is exceptional, he’s been always available, and I look forward to have him back around the team playing because I think it’s going to be a significant uplift.”
