Comey has maintained his clean record concerning the indictments

Ex- Federal Bureau of Investigation director James the former director has pleaded not guilty to making false statements to US legislators and impeding a legislative process.

The former director's attorney filed the answer acting as his counsel in a federal court in the Virginia city of Alexandria on mid-week.

Patrick Fitzgerald stated he would try to have the legal matter thrown out for several reasons including that his defendant, a detractor of former President Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.

Mr Comey was formally accused shortly after the former president pushed his top legal official to move forward against him.

Court Developments

During the hearing on Wednesday, the defense counsel Mr Fitzgerald advised the court they intended to present multiple motions to terminate the case before a legal hearing, stating the prosecution was vindictive and that a government lawyer was unlawfully designated to assume control of the proceedings.

Mr Comey's legal matter was originally handled by a Virginia prosecutor, who left his position under influence from Trump after his examination into an additional rival - New York Attorney General Letitia James - was unable to initiate prosecution.

Legal Setting

The former director came across in good spirits as he entered the legal venue on mid-week, chatting with his lawyers and making jokes. He was accompanied by his partner, Mrs Failor and child his daughter, a US lawyer who the previous administration recently fired.

After listening to the judge state his rights and the two counts against him in legal proceedings on mid-week, Mr Comey was inquired if he grasped the accusations.

"Yes your honour. Appreciate it," he told the judge.

Historical Information

James Comey was the FBI Director from 2013-2017 and was dismissed about four months into Trump's first administration as president. At the moment, the director was leading an investigation into international campaign influence and whether there were any links between Russia and the election effort.

While in office, Mr Comey sparked a counter-response from liberal politicians when he announced just shortly prior to the national vote that he was examining Democratic candidate Clinton's use of a non-governmental email account. Indictments against Hillary Clinton were never brought, leading to disapproval from conservative politicians as well.

Current Allegations

The federal government assert the former director gave untrue statements to US lawmakers during a congressional hearing in 2020 when he was being questioned about both the email probe as well as the election interference investigation. They say he deceived the upper house by stating he had not approved an individual at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to leak to news outlets information about the government examinations.

Government lawyers also allege James Comey of "wrongfully trying to sway, hinder and delay" the panel by making false statements to it.

Individual Responses

Via social media James Comey posted to his Instagram after he was accused, he declared he was not guilty and accused Donald Trump of behaving like a "tyrant".

"Our household have known for years that there are costs to standing up to Donald Trump," he commented. "We will not live on our knees."
"I have done nothing wrong," he added. "Thus initiate a court case."

The accusations against Mr Comey surfaced after the former president shared on social media insisting on his top legal official, the attorney general, charge James Comey and additional individuals.
