Film Analysis: Grow – A Polished Gourd Cultivation Adventure Filled with Lively Appeal and Humor Expertise

This lively British children's film features a team of five scribes listed with the script, including two who provided “additional material”. This could explain why the story beats progress with such metronomic precision, while the personalities seem as though they were developed in a controlled environment. Ironically, the setting is a family-run farm where agronomist-owner Dinah chooses organic methods motivated by her magical niece Charlie, who feels plants’ emotions by touching them.

A Budding Relationship and a Contest-Winning Gourd

Recently introduced, for reasons the otherwise sleek screenplay fails to explain, Charlie and Dinah bond with one another across a few seasons – which aligns with the time required to cultivate a pumpkin for the annual village competition. Charlie hopes to utilize the award cash to find her mother, said to have left for pursue stardom in California.

The supporting cast is packed with delightful humorous roles from seasoned UK performers.

Notable Cameos and Antagonistic Foes

The maternal figure later emerges played by a familiar face, similar to Rosheuvel, comes from in popular series. Moreover, the cast includes a quirky horticulturist portrayed by Nick Frost, who provides pumpkin-growing tips for the duo. Meanwhile, Tim McInnerny and Jane Horrocks play the Smythe-Gherkins, the evil local elites determined to win the competition for glory alone since they don’t need the cash prize.

Youthful Talent and Directorial Flair

While his Scottish tone seems somewhat out of place in this context, his subtle performance and comic timing are so skillful it’s no surprise he has been cast for a leading part in a future show. Director John McPhail keeps a buoyant comedy tone and stays unobtrusive with what is destined to serve as evening family fun during a particular time of year.

Grow premieres via Sky Cinema from 10 October. It is currently showing in theaters across Australia, and will be released in UK and US cinemas from October 17.
