A concerned parent and Fraser's father were given heartbreaking information in 2018 when their toddler Fraser was diagnosed with a rare type of leukaemia.

An extended period of gruelling treatment ensued, involving chemotherapy, targeted radiation, and immune system treatments before a cellular therapy. Their son, by age three, made a extraordinary turnaround from the procedure, with physicians declaring the cancer in regression.

As Fraser improved that Alison, aged thirty-six, began looking for causes. She constantly recalled comments made by hospital staff at the time of her child's illness. “We're tormented wondering how Fraser got his cancer,” a specialist had told her.

“It keeps us up at night wondering how our son got his cancer,” a consultant had shared with her.

Past Events

The negligent management of enormous amounts of hazardous substances after the closure of the town's primary employer in this community in 1979 had “long been recognized,” said the mother. A 2009 civil case connected the council’s negligent clean-up of the site to a string of congenital abnormalities in community youth during the twentieth century.

Over time, the concerned mother started to associate the case to her own. “[Fraser’s cancer] is not hereditary,” she stated. “What's the explanation? … It has to be down to the area. All these kids [with] cancer.

“Each person here knows someone who’s got a minor [with] illness. This isn't typical.”

Community Action

The parents started to connect with more parents in the town with similar stories – featuring some of Gaffney’s ex-school friends at Brooke Weston Academy – and the organization began assembling thorough information on those impacted. They now lead a campaign supporting about numerous households with cases of childhood cancer starting from 1988.

The organization has been urging the town council to research any relationships between cases of youth disease in Corby and the shutdown of the industrial site. However, it also mentioned documents from the environmental authorities in 1997 that discovered stockpiles of toxic substances that had been left at the site were later taken away in “significant amounts”.

Expanding Concerns

Alison maintains waste was not merely deposited at the primary location but in additional areas of the municipality. Recently, she welcomed a “important advancement” after local authorities said it would examine soil that could be polluted and study where contaminated substances was deposited.

Alison said government representatives confirmed in the discussion that they were unaware where the sites of toxic materials could be. “They explained: ‘We lack information where these locations are. Documentation is missing, we possess no information.’”

Community Support

The government declaration was also supported by another parent, a school staff member at a local school, whose young child, the child, was diagnosed with leukaemia in June this year.

“I needed to cut my little girl's scalp because her hair was falling out from the medications she had to administer to kill her cancer. So actually it’s in everyone's benefit, it’s in her daughter's welfare [for the council] to reveal that knowledge,” she stated.

“Countless individuals in the area that have been confirmed to have youth disease and It seems it’s cannot be dismissed – it requires investigation. This isn't typical.”

Individual Accounts

Meg Lyons, 31, who has a professional career and now has moved away, said parents merited “full transparency and transparency” from the government.
