Astronaut Discloses Mental Health Struggle After Wave of Online Abuse Post-Spaceflight
A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after facing a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space earlier this year, which also carried well-known figures.
The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a public message, recalling a phone call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the journey.
She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
The researcher, who has conducted studies in female health science and operated research during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – including her scientific research and years of training to the historic significance of her heritage – was drowned out under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.
She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning championing the cause of sexual assault survivors.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was deferred after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
A Path to Recovery
Months following achieving her goal, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the well-wishers whose messages of encouragement were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.
She noted that amid the criticism, important benefits had come out of the experience, including increased focus on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
About the Mission
The fully automated New Shepard rocket lifted off from Texas in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a brief suborbital flight that crossed the edge of outer space.
The group of women also comprised accomplished professionals from different industries.
The company behind the flight is a private space firm established by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
